Source: Garuda Purana / Krishna Yajur Veda tradition
Transliteration
om lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu om shantih shantih shantih
Meaning (English)
May all beings everywhere be happy and free. May the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all. The shortest, most universal welfare mantra from Vedic tradition. Used by Ashtanga Yoga lineage of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois as closing prayer. Globally adopted by yoga schools and Sanskrit chant communities.
Benefits (Phal)
Cultivates the bodhi-chitta-like aspiration of Hindu Vedanta — that personal liberation is incomplete without the welfare of all beings. Recommended at the conclusion of any yoga practice, meditation session, or spiritual gathering. Daily recitation softens egoic boundaries between self and others.
When to Chant
Closing of yoga class, conclusion of meditation, end of any spiritual gathering, before sleep as final intention, group satsang closing.
How to Chant
Stand or sit with anjali mudra at heart. Chant 3 times — first loud, second medium, third whispered. Final om shantih three times for body, mind, spirit. Visualise the welfare radiating outward from heart to family, community, nation, all sentient beings.
