Om Namo Narayanaya — Ashtakshari Mantraॐ नमो नारायणाय

Devoted to Lord Vishnu / Narayana

Source: Narayana Upanishad of Krishna Yajurveda — the eight-syllable mantra revealed by Brahma to Narada

Sanskrit (Devanagari)
ॐ नमो नारायणाय॥

Transliteration

Om Namo Naaraayanaaya

Meaning (English)

Om, salutations to Narayana — the one who reposes upon the waters, the cosmic abode of all beings, the supreme refuge. The eight syllables (Om-Na-Mo-Naa-raa-ya-naa-ya) correspond to the eight directions, the eight forms (asta-murti), and the eight prakritis. Pancharatra Agama and Sri Vaishnava tradition treat it as the supreme Tirumantra — taught only after Pancha Samskara initiation.

Benefits (Phal)

The supreme Mahamantra of Vaishnavism per Naradiya Purana — supersedes the need for any other mantra. Continuous japa of 12 lakh repetitions over 11 months grants direct vision of Narayana per Ahirbudhnya Samhita. Bestows moksha at the end of life. Recited as the final breath at Sri Rangam, Tirumala, Badrinath. Foundational to Sri Vaishnava (Ramanuja), Madhva and Pushti Marg sampradayas.
