Devoted to Universal welfare prayer
Source: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad / various Vedic texts
Transliteration
sarve bhavantu sukhinah, sarve santu niramayah sarve bhadrani pashyantu, ma kashchid duhkhabhag-bhavet om shantih shantih shantih
Meaning (English)
May all beings be happy. May all beings be free from illness. May all see what is auspicious. May no one suffer in any way. Om peace, peace, peace. The most cited universal welfare prayer from Vedic tradition — a four-line Sanskrit verse extending good wishes not merely to ones tribe, nation, or religion but to every sentient being across all worlds. Embodies the Vedic principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family.
Benefits (Phal)
Cultivates karuna (compassion) and maitri (loving-kindness) within the chanter; recommended at start of any group gathering, conference, satsang, or spiritual practice as collective intention-setting. Daily recitation softens the heart, dissolves enmity, and aligns individual karma with cosmic welfare. Often inscribed at temples and yoga studios globally as the highest Hindu universal aspiration.
When to Chant
Opening of group meditations, satsangs, yoga classes, spiritual gatherings, before family meals, at sunrise and sunset sandhya, and as closing prayer at any ritual.
How to Chant
Stand or sit with palms in anjali mudra at heart. Chant entire mantra in unified breath where possible. Repeat 3 times minimum. Final shantih three times with diminishing volume. Visualise all sentient beings — family, friends, strangers, enemies, all species — receiving the blessing.
