Origin & story

Bhavishyottara Purana.

King Mahishmant exiled his eldest son Lumpaka for misdeeds. Living in the forest, Lumpaka accidentally fasted on Saphala Ekadashi (had no food + stayed awake from cold). Vishnu rewarded him — he reconciled with his father and inherited the kingdom. Saphala means "fruitful".

Strict phalahara fast; offer coconut + ginger paste to Vishnu.
