Akshay Navami अक्षय नवमी

Vishnu and Amla tree · Partial fasting

Akshay Navami, also called Amla Navami or Kushmanda Navami, falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Kartika and is observed as a day on which every action of dharma performed yields akshay or undiminishing merit through the entire treta yuga cycle. The Padma Purana and the Skanda Purana narrate that on this day the treta yuga began, the avatar of Krishna performed govardhan puja, and the sacred amla or Indian gooseberry tree, regarded as the dwelling place of Vishnu and Lakshmi, is to be worshipped with circumambulation and the offering of food. The most distinctive ritual of the day is the amla vriksha puja in which a satvic feast is prepared and consumed under the shade of an amla tree, with the first portion offered to the tree itself and to brahmanas seated nearby. The day also commemorates the appearance of goddess Kushmanda, the fourth form of the navadurga, who is said to have created the universe through her divine smile, and many devotees in Mathura, Vrindavan, and the Braj region undertake the eighty four kos parikrama of Braj beginning on Akshay Navami. Married women observe a special vrata for the long life and prosperity of their husbands and children, and donations of food, clothing, and gold made on this day are believed to multiply manifold in their merit.

Rituals (vidhi)

  • 1.Bathe at dawn and take a sankalpa to observe the Akshay Navami vrata for the wellbeing of family and the multiplication of dharmic merit.
  • 2.Visit an amla tree, water its roots with a kalash of fresh water mixed with milk, turmeric, and kumkum, and circumambulate it 108 times.
  • 3.Tie a sacred red and yellow thread around the trunk while offering vermilion, sandal paste, rice, durva grass, and seasonal flowers.
  • 4.Prepare a satvic feast of rice, dal, vegetables, kheer, and sweets and consume it seated under the amla tree along with family and brahmanas.
  • 5.Offer the first portion of the feast at the base of the tree as naivedya, recognizing the amla as the resident form of Vishnu and Lakshmi.
  • 6.Donate amla fruit, clothing, sesame, jaggery, and gold to brahmanas and the needy, since dana on this day yields akshay merit.
  • 7.Conclude the day in the evening with deepa daan and the recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Kushmanda devi stotra.

Significance

Akshay Navami is held in the puranas to be one of the four days of the year on which the principle of akshay or imperishable merit is fully operative, the others being Akshaya Tritiya, Bhishma Ashtami, and the parva days of the equinoxes. Whatever dharma is performed on this day, whether japa, dana, snana, or tarpana, is said to yield fruit that does not diminish through the cycles of time, making it an exceptionally rewarding day for both spiritual practice and material giving. The choice of the amla tree as the focal point of worship reflects the ayurvedic and tantric understanding of amla as the most satvic of all fruits, said to contain in concentrated form all six rasas except salt, and to be the only plant in which Vishnu is believed to reside continuously rather than at specific hours. Acharyas teach that the practice of eating the feast under the amla tree is not symbolic but biologically and energetically purifying, as the breath one inhales beneath an amla in autumn carries a measurable subtle charge that promotes longevity. The day also serves as the formal opening of the Braj parikrama season, drawing pilgrims from across India to undertake the eighty four kos circumambulation of Krishna lila sthals, which begins on Akshay Navami and concludes on Devotthan Ekadashi. For householders, the festival is a powerful day for charitable giving, especially of gold, since wealth donated on Akshay Navami is believed to return to the giver multiplied across lifetimes.
