Gudi Padwa गुडी पाडवा
Brahma / Rama · No fasting required
Maharashtrian and Konkani New Year on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Households hoist the gudi (bamboo pole with silk cloth, neem-mango leaves, sugar garland, inverted copper kalash) at the entrance at sunrise as a victory standard. Marks Brahma's creation of the universe, Shalivahana's defeat of the Shakas, and Rama's return to Ayodhya.
Rituals (vidhi)
- 1.Abhyang snan (oil bath before sunrise)
- 2.Gudi hoisting on the right side of the main door
- 3.Rangoli + mango toran at the threshold
- 4.Panchang shravan (annual almanac reading) at temples
- 5.Neem-jaggery prasad (bevu-bella) to balance bitter and sweet
Significance
Marks the first day of the lunisolar Hindu calendar in Maharashtra, Goa, and Konkan. The hoisted gudi symbolises Brahma's creative flag and Shivaji Maharaj's military victories. New ventures, gold purchases, and Griha Pravesh are considered auto-auspicious without separate muhurat lookup.
