Nirjala Ekadashi निर्जला एकादशी
Vishnu · Full-day vrat
Nirjala Ekadashi, falling on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month, is the most austere of all twenty-four Ekadashis because devotees abstain from even a single drop of water for twenty-four hours. The vrata is also called Bhimseni Ekadashi after the Pandava prince Bhima, who according to the Mahabharata could not fast on the regular Ekadashis due to his enormous appetite and was advised by sage Vyasa to observe this single waterless fast to obtain the cumulative merit of all twenty-four. The festival is observed across India with special intensity in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, where water-distribution camps (jal seva) and clay-pot donations are organized. Vaishnava temples conduct elaborate abhishekams of Lord Vishnu with panchamrita and ganga jala. In the scorching pre-monsoon heat of Jyeshtha, the vrata becomes a powerful test of bhakti, discipline, and surrender to Narayana.
Rituals (vidhi)
- 1.Take the nirjala sankalpa at sunrise on Ekadashi morning before a Vishnu idol or Salagrama.
- 2.Abstain from food and water from sunrise of Ekadashi until sunrise of Dwadashi.
- 3.Perform shodashopachara puja of Lord Vishnu with tulsi, yellow flowers, and chandan.
- 4.Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita Chapter 12, and the Bhima-Vyasa samvada from Mahabharata.
- 5.Donate water-filled clay pots (kalash daan), umbrellas, sandals, and hand-fans to Brahmins and the needy.
- 6.Stay awake at night chanting Hari nama and avoiding sleep, anger, and harsh speech.
- 7.Break the fast on Dwadashi morning with charanamrita, tulsi water, and a simple sattvic meal.
Significance
The Brahma Vaivarta Purana and the Mahabharata both declare that observing Nirjala Ekadashi grants the complete phala of all twenty-four Ekadashis of the year combined, making it the most efficient spiritual investment for those unable to fast every fortnight. Vyasa muni promised Bhima that this single vrata would secure him a place in Vaikuntha and liberate his ancestors up to fourteen generations. The phala-shruti claims dissolution of all paap accumulated since birth, freedom from yama-yatana, and the merit of performing one hundred Vajapeya yajnas. Donating water and cooling articles on this day is said to multiply punya a thousandfold because the act mirrors Narayana karuna toward thirsty souls.
