Significance

First of the 12 Jyotirlingas per the Shiva Purana. Sea-facing temple symbolises Shiva as the cosmic ocean.

Built originally by Moon-god Soma to atone for his curse; destroyed and rebuilt 17 times — last by Sardar Patel in 1951.
