Birthday / Janmadin Puja at Home
Janmadin Puja or Ayushya Homam is performed on the nakshatra-birthday (not English birthday) of a person. It invokes longevity, health, and wards off planetary afflictions for the coming year.
Spiritual significance
In Vedic tradition, the true birthday is the return of one’s birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) each month, not the calendar date. The annual nakshatra return is a powerful day for spiritual renewal.
Ayushya Homam is drawn from the Atharvaveda and involves offerings of milk, ghee, and rice to Agni with chants for longevity. Markandeya Puja is often combined for warding off untimely death.
Children, especially, benefit from annual Ayushya Homam until age 12. It is said to strengthen life force (prana) and mental clarity.
For adults, the puja clears any anticipated problems in the upcoming year based on planetary transits over the natal chart.
