Satyanarayan Katha is the recitation of the five-chapter story of Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form. Performed on auspicious occasions, full moons, and for thanksgiving, it brings peace and prosperity to the household.
Spiritual significance
The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha is drawn from the Skanda Purana, Reva Khanda. It narrates five stories that illustrate the fruits of devotion to Satya — truth — embodied as Narayana.
The ceremony is performed on Purnima (full moon), Ekadashi, or Sankranti, but devotees may choose any day for a special occasion — a new job, childbirth, recovery from illness, or simply as thanksgiving.
The central offering is panchamrit made of milk, honey, curd, ghee, and sugar, alongside banana, chooram (wheat flour pudding), and tulsi leaves. The katha must be listened to attentively by all family members.
It is believed that regular performance of Satyanarayan Katha wards off Vastu dosha, brings marital harmony, and ensures the continuity of prosperity in the family.

What to prepare at home
Arrange a clean low table (chowki) facing east or north. Cover with a yellow cloth. Keep a picture or idol of Satyanarayan. Prepare banana, mishri, and a clay diya with ghee. Family should bathe and wear clean clothes before the katha begins.

Purnima (full moon) of any month, Ekadashi, Sankranti, or personal anniversaries. Evening slot (5–8 PM) is most traditional.
