The Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is one of the oldest and largest active temple complexes in India, dating to at least the 6th century CE and rebuilt in its current Dravidian form between the 16th and 17th centuries under Nayak rulers (notably Vishwanatha Nayak and Tirumalai Nayak). The 14-acre complex enshrines Goddess Meenakshi — the fish-eyed Pandyan princess form of Parvati — and her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva). The temple has 14 gopurams ranging up to 170 feet, ornately covered in over 33,000 painted sculptures.
One of the few major temples where the goddess (Meenakshi) is venerated as the principal deity rather than the consort. The celestial wedding (Tirukalyanam) is re-enacted nightly. The Hall of 1000 Pillars and the Pottramarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Tank) are architectural masterpieces.
Meenakshi stands in tribhanga pose, holding a parrot and a lotus, painted emerald green to indicate her Pandyan origin. Sundareswarar is enshrined separately as a Shiva-linga in his own sanctum, both connected by ritual procession routes.
