Significance

The most famous Kali temple in eastern India. Sanctified as the sadhana ground of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1855–1886), who served as priest in the Nahabat chamber and realized Mother as the formless Brahman. The vision of Bhavatarini received by Ramakrishna here transformed modern Hindu thought via Swami Vivekananda → Ramakrishna Mission worldwide. 12 identical Shiva temples line the riverfront and Radha-Krishna temple stands beside.

Legend

Rani Rashmoni, the wealthy Mahishya widow zamindar of Janbazar, was directed by Mother Kali in a dream while planning Kashi pilgrimage: "build my temple on the Hooghly bank, I will manifest there myself." Brahmins refused to consecrate because Rashmoni was non-Brahmin. Ramkumar Chattopadhyay (Ramakrishna's elder brother) accepted, and after his death the 19-year-old Gadadhar (later Sri Ramakrishna) took over priesthood in 1856 — beginning the most influential mystical career in modern Hinduism.
