Kamakhya Devi Temple
कामाख्या मन्दिर
Presiding deity: Maa Kamakhya — primordial Shakti, foremost Shakti Peeth
Established: Pre-Vedic; current structure rebuilt 1565 CE by Koch king Naranarayan
Significance
Kamakhya is the foremost of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the yoni of Sati is said to have fallen when Lord Shiva carried her cremated body. Unique among Hindu temples — there is no idol. The deity is worshipped as a natural rock fissure shaped like a yoni, kept moist by an underground spring. The annual Ambubachi Mela in June celebrates the Devi menstrual cycle when the underground spring turns red — the temple closes for 3 days then reopens with special pujas attended by 500,000+ tantric sadhakas.
Legend
When Sati immolated herself at Daksha yagna, Shiva carried her body through the universe in grief. Vishnu cut the body into 51 pieces with his sudarshan chakra to break Shiva trance. Wherever pieces fell became Shakti Peethas. The yoni fell at Kamakhya. The temple itself was destroyed by Kala Pahar in 1565 CE and rebuilt by Koch king Naranarayan with the architectural fusion seen today — beehive-shaped shikhara unique to Assam.
