Nathdwara Shrinathji
नाथद्वारा श्रीनाथजी
Presiding deity: Shrinathji (Krishna as 7-year-old child lifting Mount Govardhan — left hand raised)
Established: Idol consecrated 1672 CE after journey from Govardhan (Mathura) fleeing Aurangzeb; murti is pre-Vedic swayambhu
Significance
Supreme seat (Mahaprabhuji Baithak) of the Pushtimarg sampradaya founded by Vallabhacharya. The "Nathdwara" name means "Gateway of the Lord". Famous worldwide for Pichwai cloth-paintings depicting Shrinathji that originated here.
Legend
In 1665 Aurangzeb ordered destruction of Krishna temples at Govardhan. The Shrinathji murti was secretly moved by Goswami Damodar Lalji on a bullock-cart caravan. When the cart wheel sank irrevocably in mud at Sinhad (today Nathdwara), the priests recognized this as the Lord choosing his new abode. Mewar Maharana Raj Singh granted asylum and built the haveli temple.
