Significance
Among the oldest + most sacred Shiva temples globally. Four-faced (Chaturmukha) lingam — east face represents Tatpurusha, south Aghora, west Sadyojata, north Vamadeva. Considered the head of all Shiva Jyotirlingas. Located on Bagmati river. Strong NRI Indian Hindu + Nepali diaspora pilgrimage. Legend
Per Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva took the form of a deer to escape from the gods seeking him. Vishnu disguised as a hunter caught Shiva by the horn. As Shiva escaped, the horn broke + fell at Kathmandu valley — establishing Pashupatinath. The current four-faced lingam represents the four primary Shiva forms revealed at this spot.
