Legend

The Ranganatha vigraha was originally worshipped by Surya Bhagwan in Satya yuga, then given to Ikshvaku and passed down through the Ikshvaku dynasty to Sri Rama; Rama gifted the idol to Vibhishana after the Lanka victory; while travelling south to Lanka, Vibhishana placed the idol on the Cauvery banks for his evening sandhya — the deity refused to be lifted again, choosing to remain at Srirangam facing south so that Vibhishana could still see his beloved Lord from Lanka; Sri Ramanujacharya later established the systematic temple worship and 9 acharya succession that continues today
