Significance

One of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the third eye (nayan-tara) of Sati is believed to have fallen; foremost Siddha Peetha for tantric sadhana in eastern India; the adjacent Mahasmashan (great cremation ground) is one of the eight Maha Smashans for Aghori and Kapalika practice

Legend

Sage Vasishtha performed tantric sadhana here and had darshan of Tara nursing infant Shiva under a banyan tree, recreating the scene from the Samudra Manthan when Tara saved Shiva from the Halahala poison; the legendary 19th-century saint Bamakhepa lived in the Mahasmashan and is considered the temples greatest siddha, with his samadhi adjacent to the shrine
