About this yatra

The Amarnath Cave shrine, situated at 3,888 metres (12,756 ft) in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir, houses one of the most mystical Shiva manifestations on earth — a naturally-formed ice stalagmite that waxes and wanes with the lunar cycle, worshipped as a Swayambhu Lingam of Lord Shiva. Two smaller ice formations alongside represent Mata Parvati and Lord Ganesha. Hindu tradition holds that Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Parvati inside this 40-metre-tall cave — the legend is recorded in the Nilamata Purana (6th-7th century) and Kalhana's Rajatarangini. The yatra runs for roughly 45 days each year during Shravan (July-August), managed by the Shree Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). Pilgrims choose between two routes: the traditional 43 km, 3-5 day trail from Pahalgam-Chandanwari via Sheshnag and Panchtarni, or the steeper 13 km Baltal route completed in 1-2 days. Helicopter service runs from Pahalgam and Baltal to Panjtarni, six kilometres from the cave. Online registration via SASB, a Compulsory Health Certificate from authorised doctors, and an RFID tracking tag are mandatory since 2019. Acclimatisation, warm clothing, and physical fitness are non-negotiable for this high-altitude darshan.

Best time to visit

July to early August during the Shravan month. Exact yatra dates (typically late June to Raksha Bandhan) are announced annually by the Shree Amarnath Shrine Board. Avoid the first and last week — slots fill 3 months ahead.

How to reach

Fly to Srinagar Airport (SXR). For the Pahalgam route, drive 95 km to Pahalgam, then to base camp Chandanwari (16 km). For Baltal route, drive 100 km via Sonamarg. Both routes have JKSRTC and private cab service from Srinagar/Jammu. Yatra registration counters are at Jammu, Srinagar, Pahalgam and Baltal.

What to expect

Strenuous high-altitude trek (3,888 m), sub-zero nights even in July, mandatory RFID tag and medical certificate, langar tents along the route, helicopter shuttles to Panjtarni, ponies/palkis available, ice lingam darshan with strict no-photography rules inside the cave, return same day from Pahalgam or Baltal base camp.
