Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple
Renowned Kerala Devi temple near Kochi famed for exorcism rituals and Makam Thozhal darshan.
About this yatra
Sree Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple, located 17 km southeast of Kochi in Ernakulam district, is among Kerala's most powerful Shakta shrines, where Goddess Rajarajeshwari is worshipped in three sattvic forms across the day — as Maha Saraswati at dawn draped in white, as Maha Lakshmi at noon in crimson, and as Maha Durga at dusk in deep blue. The temple's distinct Kerala architecture, with sloping copper-tiled roofs, gold-plated dhwajasthambham, and the unique Keezhkkavu shrine of Bhadrakali a kilometre downhill, reflects centuries of Tantric tradition systematised by sage Villwamangalam Swamiyar. Chottanikkara is particularly revered for guruti pooja — a midnight Bhadrakali ritual believed to liberate devotees from spirit afflictions and mental distress, with the iconic Pala tree behind the Keezhkkavu sannidhanam bearing nails driven by those cured. The Makam Thozhal in February, when the Devi appears in resplendent aabharanam, draws over one lakh women devotees. Our two-day package includes Kochi airport pickup, Chottanikkara melkavu and keezhkkavu darshan, guruti pooja booking, priest-assisted archana, and visits to nearby Thiruvairanikulam Mahadeva and Ernakulathappan temples. Expect traditional Kerala Tantric ambience, banana-leaf prasadam, and profound experiential Shakti worship distinct from north Indian Devi traditions.
