Hampi Virupaksha and Vijayanagara Yatra

A four day spiritual and heritage pilgrimage through the living Virupaksha temple and the UNESCO ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara empire on the Tungabhadra.

4 days Karnataka from ₹13,500/person

About this yatra

Hampi, set in the boulder strewn landscape on the south bank of the Tungabhadra river in the Bellary district of Karnataka, is at once a living Shaivite pilgrimage and a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving the ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara empire which between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries was among the wealthiest and most magnificent capitals in the world. The spiritual heart of Hampi is the Virupaksha temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as the consort of Pampa Devi, a form of Parvati associated with the local Tungabhadra river goddess, and this shrine has been in continuous worship for more than seven centuries making it one of the oldest functioning temples in India. This four day yatra weaves the active temple darshan with extensive exploration of the surrounding sacred archaeological landscape, ensuring devotees experience both the living devotion and the historical depth of Pampakshetra, the ancient name of Hampi. Day one begins with morning darshan at Virupaksha temple, abhishekam at the Garbha Griha, and a guided walk through the nine storied main gopuram which towers fifty metres above the Hampi Bazaar; the afternoon visits the riverside Kodandarama temple, the sacred Chakratirtha bathing ghat where Lord Rama is said to have crowned Sugriva king of the Vanaras, and the Yantroddharaka Anjaneya temple consecrated by Sri Vyasaraja Tirtha. Day two explores the Vitthala temple complex with its famous stone chariot and musical pillars, the Achyutaraya temple, and the Hazara Rama temple inside the royal enclosure which has the entire Ramayana carved in stone friezes along its outer walls. Day three is dedicated to the Anegundi side of the Tungabhadra accessed by coracle, including the Anjanadri Hill which Vaishnava tradition reveres as the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, climbing 575 steps for breathtaking sunrise darshan, then visiting the Pampa Sarovara, the Rishyamukha Parvata, and the Durga temple at Anegundi. Day four covers the underground Shiva temple, the Krishna temple complex built by Krishnadevaraya, the monolithic Lakshmi Narasimha and Badavalinga shrines, and ends with sunset arati on the riverbank at Virupaksha. The package includes pickup from Hubli or Bengaluru airport, four nights in a comfortable heritage style hotel near the river, all vegetarian meals, a UNESCO licensed guide who is also a traditional purohit, coracle rides, temple entry fees, abhishekam ingredients, and an English Kannada multilingual local pilgrim handbook.
