Haridwar & Rishikesh
Twin Ganga tirthas — Haridwar where the river enters the plains, and Rishikesh the world capital of Yoga.
About this yatra
Haridwar (Gateway of Hari) and Rishikesh (Place of the Rishis), separated by 25 km along the Ganga in Uttarakhand, together form one of the most spiritually charged twin-pilgrimage zones in India. Haridwar is one of the seven Sapta Puri sacred cities and one of the four Kumbh Mela venues (every 12 years, last in 2021 and next in 2033). Its Har Ki Pauri ghat marks the precise spot where Vishnu is said to have left his footprint, and where the Ganga is believed to have descended after the churning of the ocean — the evening Ganga Aarti here, with thousands of diyas floating downstream and chants of "Jai Gange" echoing across the ghats, is among the most iconic spiritual experiences in India. Other Haridwar tirthas include Mansa Devi (cable car), Chandi Devi (cable car or 3 km trek), Maya Devi Shaktipeeth, and Daksha Mahadev Temple at Kankhal (where Sati immolated herself at her father Daksha's yajna). 25 km upstream lies Rishikesh — gateway to the Himalayas, declared the Yoga Capital of the World, where the Ganga emerges from the Shivaliks. Iconic sites include Lakshman Jhula and Ram Jhula suspension bridges, Triveni Ghat (evening Maha Aarti), Parmarth Niketan (the famed International Yoga Festival venue every March), Beatles Ashram (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's abandoned ashram where the Beatles wrote much of the White Album in 1968), and Neelkanth Mahadev Temple (where Shiva drank the Halahala poison from Samudra Manthan).
