About this yatra

Sri Jagannath Mandir at Puri is one of the four sacred Adi Shankara Char Dham (along with Badrinath in the north, Dwarka in the west, and Rameswaram in the south) and is considered the abode of Lord Jagannath — a unique form of Lord Vishnu/Krishna worshipped together with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The 12th-century temple, built by Eastern Ganga king Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, rises 65 metres above the seashore in distinctive Kalinga architecture. Strict rules apply — only those born Hindu are permitted to enter the temple; the wooden idols are uniquely unfinished (the eyes wide open and bodies armless); and every 12-19 years, the deities are replaced in the Nabakalebara ceremony using sacred neem trees identified by ritual signs. The world-famous Rath Yatra in Ashadha (June-July) sees three giant wooden chariots — Nandighosa (Jagannath, 45 ft), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra, 44 ft), and Devadalana (Subhadra, 43 ft) — pulled by lakhs of devotees from the main temple to the Gundicha Mandir 3 km away. The Mahaprasad, cooked in 752 earthen pots over wood fire and offered to Mahalakshmi, never spoils and never goes short — feeding tens of thousands daily and considered one of Hinduism's greatest culinary miracles. Combine with Konark Sun Temple (35 km), Lingaraj Mandir at Bhubaneswar (60 km), and Chilika Lake (110 km).
