About this yatra

Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India, is a triple-sacred (Trishakti) destination where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Indian Ocean converge. The Kumari Amman Temple (Bhagavathy Amman Temple) on the seashore enshrines Goddess Kanya Kumari — Devi Parvati in her virgin form, who is believed to have performed severe penance to win Shiva's hand. According to legend, the diamond nose ring of the Goddess is said to be so brilliant that ships could see it from miles out at sea, leading the eastern entrance of the temple to remain closed except on special days. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas (where Sati's spine fell, per one tradition) and one of the 108 Divya Desams (no — Kumari is part of Shakta tradition, the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavism). 500 m offshore stands the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, built in 1970 on the rock where Swami Vivekananda meditated in December 1892 before sailing to the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago — accessible by ferry, the memorial has a Dhyana Mandapam where one can sit in silent meditation overlooking three oceans. Adjacent is the 133-foot statue of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar (author of the Tirukkural), inaugurated on January 1, 2000. Kanyakumari is one of the only places on Earth where one can see the sunrise, sunset, and moonrise over the same ocean horizon, and Chitra Pournami (April full moon) sees the rare phenomenon of simultaneous sunset and moonrise across the sea.

Best time to visit

October to March. Chitra Pournami (April full moon, simultaneous sunset and moonrise) is the year's most special spectacle. Avoid May-July (peak heat) and October-December monsoon spells.
