About this yatra
Melukote, also known as Thirunarayanapuram, crowns the Yadugiri hill in Karnataka's Mandya district and stands as one of the seven most sacred kshetras of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. The Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple, presiding over the lower town, enshrines the swayambhu utsava murti recovered by Sri Ramanujacharya in the twelfth century from Delhi's Sultanate, where it had been gifted to the Sultan's daughter — a story still commemorated through the Bibi Nachiyar sannidhi within the temple. Ramanujacharya spent fourteen years here codifying Vishishtadvaita philosophy, establishing the Pancharatra agama worship protocols still followed today. The temple's Hoysala-Vijayanagara composite architecture, with intricately carved garbhagriha pillars and the towering rajagopuram, complements the hilltop Yoga Narasimha shrine reached by 300 stone steps offering panoramic Deccan plateau views. The annual Vairamudi Brahmotsavam each March-April draws lakhs to witness the deity adorned with the legendary diamond crown, traditionally believed to belong to Lord Vishnu himself, guarded year-round by the Mysore royal treasury.
