Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Mandhata Island Yatra
Three day pilgrimage to the OM shaped island Jyotirlinga on the Narmada, with the sacred parikrama and the twin Mamleshwar shrine.
About this yatra
Omkareshwar is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and uniquely the only one located on a river island, namely the Mandhata or Shivpuri island formed by the Narmada river splitting into two branches near Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh. The island itself is said to be shaped like the sacred syllable Om when viewed from above, giving the shrine its name Omkareshwar, the Lord of Omkara. The pilgrimage tradition holds that the worship is incomplete unless the devotee visits both the Omkareshwar temple on the island and the Mamleshwar temple, also called Amareshwar, on the south bank, as the original Puranic Jyotirlinga is considered to manifest in both shrines, and Adi Shankaracharya himself referenced both in his Dvadasha Jyotirlinga stotra. This three day yatra is designed for devotees who wish to complete the full traditional pilgrimage including the unique seven kilometre Narmada parikrama around the island which according to Puranic tradition liberates the soul from the cycle of rebirth. Day one covers arrival, an evening of Narmada arati at the Brahmapuri ghat where lamps are floated on the river, a private boat ride to the Mandhata island, and the first abhishekam at the Omkareshwar Garbha Griha which contains the self manifest Jyotirlinga in a niche where natural water collects continuously without any external source. Day two begins at 5 AM with the Mangal arati, followed by the seven kilometre island parikrama on foot through ancient temple ruins and the Siddhanath, Gauri Somnath, and Annapurna shrines en route, returning by mid day for the rudrabhishekam with bilva patra, Narmada water, milk and honey. The afternoon crosses to the south bank for the Mamleshwar darshan and abhishekam, followed by a visit to the cave where Adi Shankaracharya is said to have met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada and received initiation. Day three is reserved for the Kajal Rani caves with their natural Shiva linga formations, the Kuber temple, the Surya Narayan temple, and concludes with a final evening arati at the Omkareshwar sanctum. The package includes pickup from Indore airport, three nights of accommodation in a Narmada riverfront guest house, traditional satvic meals prepared with Narmada water, abhishekam at both Jyotirlingas, boat rides, parikrama with a panda guide, and a pilgrim handbook with the Dvadasha Jyotirlinga stotra in Sanskrit and transliteration.
