Palani Murugan Temple
Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple at Palani — the third of the six Aaru Padai Veedu (sacred abodes) of Lord Muruga.
About this yatra
The Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple at Palani in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu is the third and most celebrated of the six Aaru Padai Veedu (Battle Camps) of Lord Murugan — the others being Thiruparankundram, Tiruchendur, Swamimalai, Tiruttani, and Pazhamudircholai. The temple stands atop the Palani Hills 1500 ft above the plains, reached by a steep 690-step climb up the Giri Veedhi or by ropeway/winch service. The presiding deity, Lord Dhandayuthapani (the One Who Bears the Staff), is worshipped here as the renunciant young yogi — depicted with shaven head, kaupina (loincloth), and danda (ascetic's staff), recalling the famous puranic story in which the boy Murugan, having lost the contest of "going around the world" to his elder brother Ganesha (who simply walked around their parents Shiva and Parvati), renounced his royal upbringing in a fit of disappointment and came to live at Palani as a hermit. The temple murti is unique — sculpted by Siddhar Bhogar from the legendary Navapashanam (nine-poisons alloy), the abhishekam waters from the deity are believed to carry healing properties, and the resulting Panchamrita prasadam is famous across South India. Adi Krittikai (July-August) and Thai Poosam (January-February) are the two great festivals, drawing millions of Kavadi-bearing devotees who walk barefoot from across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Best time to visit
October to March for the climb. Thai Poosam (Jan-Feb) and Adi Krittikai (Jul-Aug) are spiritually most charged but extremely crowded — Kavadi processions and full hill darshan only possible by walking. Sankalpam Pradosham (every fortnight) special abhishekam.
