Pushkar — Only Brahma Temple
The only Brahma temple in India on the sacred Pushkar Lake — completing all four dhams without Pushkar is incomplete.
About this yatra
Pushkar in Rajasthan, 14 km from Ajmer, holds the unique honour of housing the only major Brahma temple in India. Legend says when Brahma dropped a lotus to determine the place for his yajna, the petals fell at three spots — Jyestha, Madhya and Kanishtha Pushkar — and the present Pushkar Lake formed where the central petal fell. Brahma himself performed his yajna here, and tradition holds that a Char Dham pilgrim must end at Pushkar to fully complete their yatra. The 14th-century Jagatpita Brahma Mandir on the western bank features a distinctive red shikhara with a hamsa (swan) motif; only ascetic Sannyasins of the Parashar gotra are permitted to enter the sanctum. The lake is ringed by 52 ghats — bathing on Kartik Purnima (Nov full moon) is believed to grant moksha equal to performing ten Ashwamedha yajnas. The annual Pushkar Camel Fair (Kartik Ekadashi to Purnima) draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and tourists, combining devotional ritual with the world's largest livestock fair. Side trips include the Savitri Mata Temple atop Ratnagiri (cable car), Varaha Temple, Rangji Temple in South Indian style, and Ajmer Sharif Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti — making Pushkar-Ajmer a unique Hindu-Sufi combined pilgrimage.
