About this yatra

Sabarimala in the Periyar Tiger Reserve on the Sahyadri ranges of Kerala houses the famous Sri Dharmasastha Ayyappa Swamy Temple — the second-most visited religious site in India after Tirumala, drawing 40-50 million pilgrims annually during the Mandala-Makaravilakku season (mid-November to mid-January). Lord Ayyappa, considered the son of Hari (Vishnu in Mohini form) and Hara (Shiva), is worshipped here as a celibate Naishtika Brahmachari — uniquely, women of menstrual age (10-50) traditionally do not undertake the pilgrimage out of respect for Ayyappa's vow of celibacy, a custom that has been the subject of intense legal and social debate. The yatra demands 41 days of vratam — strict vegetarian diet, celibacy, no alcohol, daily pre-dawn cold-water bath, wearing black or saffron dhoti and the mala (rudraksha or tulsi beads tied by a Guruswami). Devotees carry the irumudi (a two-pouched bundle containing offerings) atop their head and trek the final 5 km from Pamba on foot, ascending the famous 18 sacred steps (Pathinettampadi) chanting "Swamiye Sharanam Ayyappa". Each of the 18 steps represents a phase to overcome — the five senses, eight ragas, three gunas, vidya and avidya. The Makaravilakhu darshan on Makar Sankranti (Jan 14) sees the celestial Makara Jyothi appear on the eastern hills, considered the divine darshan of Ayyappa himself.
