Vrindavan & Mathura — Krishna Janmabhoomi
Birth place of Lord Krishna at Mathura and the lila-bhoomi of Vrindavan where the divine flute still echoes.
About this yatra
The twin sacred towns of Mathura and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh form the most beloved Vaishnava pilgrimage circuit — the very land where Lord Krishna took birth, played his childhood lilas with the gopis, and lifted Govardhan Hill. Mathura is built around Krishna Janmabhoomi, the prison cell where Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva on Shravan Krishna Ashtami (Janmashtami). The current Sri Krishna Janmasthan complex contains the Garbha Griha shrine adjacent to the Shahi Idgah, and is one of the most heavily guarded sites in India. Vrindavan, 12 km away, houses over 5,000 temples — the most famous being Banke Bihari Mandir (the swaying-curtain darshan tradition), ISKCON Krishna-Balaram Mandir (English-speaking visitor-friendly), Prem Mandir (modern marble masterpiece by JKP), Sri Radha Raman, Govind Dev Ji, Madan Mohan, and the seven Goswami temples of the Six Goswamis tradition. The full Braj parikrama covers 84 kos (about 252 km) over 7-30 days, encompassing Govardhan (with mandatory parikrama barefoot or by dandavat pranam), Barsana (birthplace of Radha), Nandgaon (Krishna's foster home), Gokul (where Krishna was raised), and Mathura. Janmashtami, Holi at Barsana (Lathmar Holi), and Sharad Purnima are the most powerful festival visits.
Best time to visit
October to March. Janmashtami (Aug-Sep), Holi (March) at Barsana, and Sharad Purnima (Oct) are spectacular but extremely crowded.
