Narasimha Aarti (Jai Narasimha Hari)

Aarti to Lord Narasimha — Vishnu's fourth avatara, the man-lion who emerged from a pillar at twilight to slay the demon Hiranyakashipu and protect his child-devotee Prahlada. Sung at the nine Narasimha shrines of Ahobilam in Andhra Pradesh and at the Ugra Narasimha temples of Hampi and Melkote. Invoked for fierce protection against enemies, evil spirits and dread diseases.

5 minNarasimha Jayanti (Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi), at Ahobilam, daily evenings at Vaishnava temples

Lyrics (Devanagari)

Meaning

Victory to Lord Narasimha, Hari. Bursting forth from the pillar, you slew the demon Hiranya. Wondrous is your form — man's body, lion's face, flame-like tongue and razor-sharp claws. Placing Hiranyakashipu upon your lap, you tore open his belly and saved the devotee Prahlada, granting him fearlessness. When your fierce form grew calm, Lakshmi bathed your feet. You dwell at Ahobilam in nine sacred forms. Whoever meditates on you is freed from fear and trouble — disease, ill-omens and planetary afflictions all vanish at your remembrance.
