Story / Origin

The Gayatri mantra is direct invocation of Savitar — "we meditate on the radiance of Savita." When Brahmins are initiated via Upanayana, they receive the Gayatri-Savitar as their lifelong sadhana. Different from Surya — Savitar is the impelling intelligence behind sunlight, while Surya is the disc itself.
