What This Chakra Governs

Survival instinct, physical body, grounding, basic security, sense of belonging, root identity

Tantric Summary

The root chakra is where Kundalini lies coiled. It governs everything that anchors a human to the physical plane — money, home, body, tribe. When blocked, survival fear distorts every higher decision. When opened, a person feels they have a right to exist. In Tantric tradition, Muladhara is symbolised by a four-petaled red lotus at the perineum containing a downward triangle (the seed of manifestation) and the syllable LAṂ. Ganesha is its presiding remover-of-obstacles because before any spiritual ascent, the gross obstacles of survival must be cleared. A balanced root chakra is the foundation on which the entire energetic body stands.
