Meaning (English)
Salutations to Shiva — the syllable Na — adorned with the king of serpents as garland, the three-eyed one, smeared with sacred ash, the great Lord, eternal, pure, sky-clad. Salutations to Shiva — the syllable Ma — anointed with sandal and Ganga waters, lord of Nandi and the ganas, worshipped with mandara and many other flowers. Each subsequent verse meditates on Shi (red as cinder), Va (banner of the bull-vehicle), and Ya (the form of bliss of yogis).
Benefits (Phal)
Phala-shruti promises liberation in the Shiva-loka for whoever recites these five verses devoutly. Daily morning recitation purifies the five subtle koshas, dissolves the five gross elements into the Self, and dissolves the five sense-perceptions into Shiva-consciousness. Especially efficacious on Pradosh, Maha Shivaratri and every Monday.
When to Chant
Brahmamuhurta; every Monday after Shiva abhisheka; Pradosh kala (1.5 hours before sunset on Trayodashi); Maha Shivaratri all four prahars; Shravan month.
How to Chant
Sit facing east or north; rudraksha mala; full 5-verse stotra ~3 minutes; one round of 3 or 11 recitations; offer bilva patra and water on Shiva linga at the end.
