Soundarya Lahari — Opening Verseसौन्दर्यलहरी
Devoted to Tripurasundari (Lalita — Sri Vidya supreme goddess)
Source: Adi Shankaracharya — 100-verse hymn split into Ananda Lahari (1-41 mantra-shastra) and Soundarya Lahari (42-100 physical beauty of the Devi)
Transliteration
Shivah Shaktyaa yukto yadi bhavati shaktah prabhavitum | Na ched-evam devo na khalu kushalah spanditum-api | Atas-tvaam-aaraadhyaam Hari-Hara-Viranchaad-ibhir-api | Pranantum stotum vaa katham-akrita-punyah prabhavati
Meaning (English)
Shiva becomes capable of acting only when united with Shakti; without you he is incapable of even a single stir. Therefore, you who are worshipped even by Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma — how shall one who has not accumulated merit dare to even bow to you, let alone praise you? The single most-quoted opening verse of Adi Shankara in all Devi sadhana — the philosophical foundation of Shakta-Advaita and Sri Vidya tantra.
Benefits (Phal)
Each of the 100 verses is itself a yantra-mantra; reciting verse 1 daily is said to grant tantric initiation. Foundational text of every Sri Vidya upasaka, Lalita Sahasranama practitioner and every Devi tantric. Continuous parayana for 41 days promises perfection in any chosen sadhana.
When to Chant
Brahmamuhurta on every Friday; Navaratri 9 days (one chapter per day); full moon nights; before any major Sri Yantra puja.
How to Chant
Sit facing east on a red asana; sphatika or coral mala; full 100-verse parayana ~50 minutes; can be split into ananda-lahari (1-41) one day, soundarya-lahari (42-100) the next; offer red flowers and kumkum to Sri Yantra.
