Origin story
Emerged when tapas of accumulated saints required a personification of inner heat. Patron of fierce tantric sadhana, austerity, withdrawal of universe at pralaya. Fifth Mahavidya, fiercest after Kali.
Iconography
Four-armed, smouldering crimson body like 10,000 rising suns, seated on a lotus on a corpse. Hands hold: japa mala, book (Vedas), abhaya, varada. Crescent moon, three eyes, garland of severed heads. Both terrifying and compassionate to her devotee.
