Origin story
When Sati was insulted by her father Daksha she devoured her own husband Shiva from intense hunger — then realised her error and vomited him back. From that moment she became Dhumavati — widowed, smoke-emerged, beyond all auspiciousness. The void state of cosmos at pralaya. Seventh Mahavidya.
Iconography
Old widow, smoky pale grey body, dishevelled hair, missing teeth, long crooked nose, pendulous breasts, riding a horseless chariot bearing a crow banner. Holds winnowing basket. Always hungry, always smoking. The most inauspicious-looking yet liberating Mahavidya.
