After thousand-year tapas as Brahmacharini her body had darkened. Shiva washed her with Ganges water and she emerged dazzling white — pure as a conch, the moon, jasmine. Symbolises purification: after every struggle comes radiance. Forgives all past sins of devotees.
Iconography
Four-armed, conch-white complexion, only sixteen years old, mounted on a white bull. Holds trishul and damaru (drum); other two hands in abhaya and varada. Always smiling — the eternal bride of Shiva.
