Origin & story

Padma Purana.

A miserly Brahmani who never gave charity in life was reborn into a stingy existence. Vishnu instructed her to use sesame seeds (tila) in 6 ways on this Ekadashi — bathing, anointing, offering, eating, fire-offering, giving in charity. "Shattila" = "six (uses of) sesame". She was liberated.

Phalahara fast; perform 6 sesame-rituals.
