Origin & story

Padma Purana.

A celestial Gandharva and Apsara couple (Malyavan and Pushpavati) were cursed by Indra to become pishachas (ghouls) for misbehaviour in his court. Wandering miserably they accidentally observed Jaya Ekadashi. Their ghoul-state ended; they regained celestial form. Jaya means "victory".

Strict phalahara fast; recite Vishnu Sahasranama.
