Legend & origin story
The most extolled river of the Rig Veda — "ambitame, naditame, devitame Saraswati" (best of mothers, best of rivers, best of goddesses). She is said to have gone underground (antah-salila) when her course dried in the late Vedic period, choosing concealment to preserve her sanctity. Satellite imaging of the Ghaggar–Hakra palaeochannel has revived debate over her physical course.
Spiritual significance
Saraswati is jnana-shakti — the river of pure knowledge, music, speech, and the Vedas themselves. Bathing in the invisible third stream at Triveni Sangam during Kumbh is held to wash buddhi-mala (impurities of intellect) and bestow the gift of vac-siddhi (perfected speech). Vasant Panchami invokes her at every educational sankalpa across Bharat.
