Baidyanath Dham (Vaidyanath) in Deoghar is among the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the most-visited Shiva shrines in India, particularly during Shravan. Legend says Ravana carried a Shiva lingam from Kailash toward Lanka but had to put it down at Deoghar — where it became fixed. Vishnu, disguised as a Brahmin, tricked Ravana into setting it down. Shiva here is the "Lord of Physicians" — Vaidyanath — and is believed to cure ailments. Deoghar ("abode of God") is part of the Shravani Mela, during which millions of Kanwariyas walk 108 km barefoot from Sultanganj carrying Ganga jal on bamboo poles, to offer at Baidyanath.
Unique among Jyotirlingas for also being a Shakti Peetha (where Sati's heart fell). Simultaneous Shiva + Shakti darshan makes it doubly powerful. Also the healing Jyotirlinga.
The Swayambhu lingam is 5 inches above the floor, with a top slightly cupped to hold water. It is enclosed in an elaborate silver altar.

Baidyanath is both a Jyotirlinga AND Shakti Peetha (where Sati's heart fell). Traditional pilgrims visit Basukinath (42 km away) immediately after Baidyanath to complete the "Baba Baidyanath – Basukinath" yatra. During Shravani Mela (Jul-Aug), book pujas online well in advance.
“Did Kanwar Yatra from Sultanganj — 108 km, 4 days barefoot. Offering Ganga jal at Baba Dham is the peak of a Shiv bhakt's life.”
“Rogashanti puja for my father's illness — within 2 months he recovered. Baba Vaidyanath ki kripa.”
“Visited during Shravan. Crowds are intense but the energy is divine.”
