Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is among the twelve Jyotirlingas and is unique for being a "Dakshinamukhi" lingam — the only one facing south. The temple is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, the Shiva Purana and in Kalidasa's Meghadūta. The original structure was destroyed by Iltutmish in 1235 CE. Between 1732 and 1734, Maratha general Ranoji Shinde rebuilt the present temple in Bhumija style. Mahakaleshwar is considered one of the 7 Mukti-Sthalas — places that grant final liberation. Ujjain is also counted as one of the Sapta Puri and Moksha-puri, and is where the Kumbh Mela (Simhastha) is held every 12 years. The recent Mahakal Lok Corridor, inaugurated in 2022, has transformed the pilgrim experience.
Mahakaleshwar is the only Jyotirlinga that is Swayambhu (self-manifested) and Dakshinamukhi. Ujjain was historically the prime meridian of India, and Shiva here is called "Mahakal" — the master of time itself.
The lingam is anointed every morning with Bhasma (sacred ash), believed to be from a cremation ground — making this the only Bhasma Aarti in the world. The lingam faces south, representing Shiva as the destroyer who faces the realm of Yama.
