Shree Jagannath Puri is one of the four Char Dhams, alongside Badrinath, Dwarka and Rameswaram. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu/Krishna), Balabhadra (elder brother), and Subhadra (sister), the temple's wooden deities are unique — carved in incomplete form. Legend: King Indradyumna, seeking to install a divine murti, found a sacred log washing ashore. A divine carpenter agreed to carve the deities but demanded 21 days of undisturbed solitude. After 14 days the king grew impatient and opened the door — the carpenter (Vishvakarma/Vishnu himself) vanished leaving the deities incomplete. This incomplete form is worshipped to this day. The present temple was built by King Chodaganga Deva in the 12th century. The Nabakalebara ritual (every 12–19 years) reconsecrates the deities with new neem wood bodies, while transferring the "Brahma" (soul substance) in absolute secrecy.
One of the Char Dhams. Famous for the Rath Yatra (chariot festival) where the deities are pulled through Puri by millions. Mahaprasad (the temple's food offering) is believed to be Anna-Brahma itself — never contaminable.
Jagannath (black/darker skin, large round eyes, wooden form), Balabhadra (fair, wooden), Subhadra (smaller, wooden) — all three installed on the Ratnavedi (jewelled platform).

Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple — this is strictly enforced. Rath Yatra (June/July) attracts millions — book accommodation 6+ months in advance. Mahaprasad at Anand Bazar (within temple complex) is a must-experience. The temple's flag changes direction of wind — scientifically unexplained phenomenon.
“Rath Yatra from childhood — every year I pull the rope. No experience compares.”
“Mahaprasad in the Anand Bazar is simple, sacred, and never gets cold even after hours — Jagannath's miracle.”
“Chatur Dham complete. Sunabesa darshan after Bahuda Yatra was spectacular.”
Unfortunately no — non-Hindus are not permitted inside. They can view it from the rooftop of Raghunandan Library across the road.
56 dishes cooked on sacred fires and offered to the Lord. Available in the Anand Bazar inside the temple complex.
Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya (June/July). Nine-day festival ending with Bahuda Yatra (return).
Outside — yes. Inside sanctum and during Rath Yatra procession — restricted.
The temple's flag flies in the opposite direction of the wind. No bird flies over it. The Singhadwar (Lion Gate) loses sea sound once entered.
