About Tirumala Tirupati Venkateswara Temple

History

Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, on the Tirumala hills in Andhra Pradesh, is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara (Balaji) — an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is the richest Hindu temple in the world and the most-visited place of worship anywhere, with 50,000–100,000 devotees daily. The temple is mentioned in the Alwars' Divya Prabandham (8th century) and is one of the 108 Divya Desams. It was developed by successive dynasties — Pallavas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara emperors (notably Krishnadevaraya) — and endowed with vast gold and jewels. The TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) trust manages it today. The self-manifested deity has a permanent sheen of camphor and the famed "Suprabhatam" awakening hymn has become world-renowned.

Significance

Believed that Lord Venkateswara took a loan from Kubera (god of wealth) to marry Goddess Padmavathi, and the interest is being repaid by devotees through the hundi (donation box). The Tirumala hundi collects over ₹1,500 crores annually.

About the Deity

The 8-foot Swayambhu murti stands in the sanctum with a thick layer of fragrant paste (karpura-kaapu) that is replenished every Friday during the Abhishekam.
