Omkareshwar sits on the Mandhata island in the Narmada river, shaped naturally like the sacred syllable "Om." It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, alongside a second Shiva shrine — Amareshwar — on the south bank. The combined darshan of Omkareshwar and Amareshwar is considered one Jyotirlinga darshan. King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty is said to have worshipped Shiva here after extreme penance, granting the island its name. The present temple is in Bhumija architecture, with five floors, each housing a separate shrine.
The only Jyotirlinga in the shape of Om, reinforced by the Narmada river itself which bends to form the sacred syllable around the island. Considered a spiritually charged place for meditation.
The lingam is naturally formed (Swayambhu) and is placed not at the centre of the sanctum, but to one side. Water naturally fills around the lingam — a phenomenon unique among all Jyotirlingas.
