About Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga (Srisailam)
History
Mallikarjuna at Srisailam, on the Nallamala hills beside the Krishna river, is among the twelve Jyotirlingas and also among the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas (Bhramaramba Devi). The story: after his wedding, Kartikeya was hurt when his parents gave the divine mango to Ganesha and stormed off to Mount Kraunch. Parvati and Shiva followed to console him — and settled there as Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba. Mallika means jasmine (Parvati's favourite flower), Arjuna is Shiva. The temple finds mention in Mahabharata, Skanda Purana and Shiva Purana. Historical reconstruction and contributions came from the Satavahanas, Ikshvakus, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara and Maratha dynasties. Chhatrapati Shivaji built the northern gopuram in the 17th century.
Significance
Rare combination of Jyotirlinga + Shakti Peetha in one complex — bhakts can touch both Shiva and Shakti here. Known as the "Kashi of the South."

Pilgrim's Note
Srisailam is unique — one of the rare sites combining a Jyotirlinga and Shakti Peetha. Both Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba must be visited. Book accommodation through the Devasthanam website — cheaper and closer than hotels.
