Amarnath Cave Shrine
अमरनाथ गुफा
Presiding deity: Lord Shiva (Amarnath — Lord of Immortality)
Established: Ancient pre-historic site; current pilgrimage tradition revived 1850 CE
Significance
Among the most challenging Hindu pilgrimages — requires multi-day trek to 3,888m altitude cave shrine. The natural ice-formed Shiva lingam (formed from glacial melt) waxes and wanes with the lunar cycle, reaching maximum height during Shravan Purnima — the peak yatra day. Per Skanda Purana, this is where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of immortality (amar-katha) to Goddess Parvati. Pre-dates Vedic times.
Legend
Lord Shiva chose this remote cave to reveal the secret of immortality (amar-katha) to Goddess Parvati, leaving behind his bull Nandi at Pahalgam, his moon at Chandanwari, his snakes at Sheshnag, his five elements at Panchtarni. As Shiva narrated the secret to Parvati inside the cave, a pair of pigeons (kabutar) overheard — they too became immortal, and yatris occasionally report seeing these immortal pigeons at the cave.
