Established: Pre-historic; current structure 12th-17th century CE

The temple is associated with the Ramayana — Lord Rama is believed to have installed the lingam here before crossing to Lanka. 22 sacred theerthams (wells) within the complex; the 22-well bathing ritual is integral to the pilgrimage.
Legend
Per Ramayana, before crossing the ocean to Lanka, Lord Rama installed a Shiva lingam at this spot for protection and victory. After defeating Ravana and returning, Rama performed the formal consecration ceremony — the deity is therefore called Ramanatha (Lord installed by Rama). The 22 sacred wells in the temple complex are believed to have appeared when Rama shot arrows into the ground at different angles to provide water for his army.
