Significance

Headquarters of the worldwide Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda based on the teachings of his guru Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. The temple architecture deliberately combines Hindu, Christian, and Islamic motifs — a physical manifestation of Vedanta universal vision. Sri Ramakrishna ashes are interred here. The Mission runs hospitals, schools, and relief programs across 200+ centres globally.

Legend

After Sri Ramakrishna mahasamadhi in 1886, his foremost disciple Swami Vivekananda returned from the Chicago Parliament of Religions (1893) inspired to build a permanent base. Land at Belur on the Hooghly river was acquired in 1898 with help of British devotee Mrs. Sevier. The main temple, designed by Vivekananda himself, took 38 years to complete (1938) — fusion of Hindu mandir, mosque minarets, church spires, and Buddhist stupa to symbolise universal acceptance.
