Significance

One of the most architecturally significant Hindu temples — 14 towering gopurams covered with 33,000 sculpted figures. Unique tradition of Meenakshi Thirukalyanam (divine wedding) re-enactment every evening. Meenakshi is worshipped not as consort but as the principal deity — a Shaktist tradition where the goddess holds primacy. The temple complex spans 6 hectares with the Aayiram Kaal Mandapam (Thousand Pillar Hall) housing 985 intricately carved pillars.

Legend

King Malayadhwaja Pandyan performed a yajna seeking a son. From the fire emerged a three-year-old girl with three breasts — the prophecy: when she meets her destined husband, the third breast would disappear. She grew up trained as a warrior princess and conquered the eight directions. Upon meeting Lord Shiva at Kailash as Sundareshwar, the third breast disappeared and the wedding took place at Madurai — celebrated annually as Chithirai Thiruvizha attracting 1 million+ devotees.
